Transferring contacts from one mobile phone to another can be done by using one or more of several software programs, with little to no difficulty. Many of these programs also require the use of a piece of hardware that is designed specifically for the task at hand.

Google Sync is a software program that allows you to synchronize and transfer data, such as contacts and calendar events, wirelessly between a mobile phone and a personal computer. Once synchronized, Google Sync allows you to connect a second mobile phone for the purpose of transferring and synchronizing data with that phone, as well. Google Sync is compatible with several types of mobile phones, including iPhones, BlackBerrys and Windows Phones. You must also have a Gmail account, which acts as the online backup for all contact and calendar data, and the Google Sync application installed on both mobile phones and the PC.

Bluetooth

In conjunction with Bluetooth software programs, Bluetooth profiles, or modes, enable you to perform a variety of wireless tasks, including transferring contact data from one mobile phone to another. The Bluetooth Phone Book Access Profile allows you to share contact files between mobile devices that are equipped with this profile. The PBAP also gives you access to the mobile phone’s contact list through other devices, such as a Bluetooth-equipped vehicle. The Bluetooth File Transfer Profile, not to be confused with the File Transfer Protocol used for uploading files to the Internet, allows you to share files, including contacts, with similarly-equipped mobile devices.

USB

Transferring contact data from a mobile phone to a PC through the devices’ USB ports is another way to get files from one mobile phone to another. Once contact information has been transferred to a PC through a USB connection, you can connect a second mobile phone to the computer using its USB cable and transfer the saved data to the second device. At the time of publication, most mobile phones perform this task in mass storage mode, a feature you must enable before the connection is made. Mass storage mode simplifies the file organizational aspect of transferring data, allowing you to simply drag and drop files from one device to another through an on-screen interface.

SIM Card

All Global System for Mobile Communication phones, better known as GSM phones, require the use of a SIM card for accessing a wireless service provider’s network. At the time of publication, all phones that use T-Mobile’s and AT&T’s networks are GSM phones. A SIM card is used primarily to store data that is needed by the phone’s carrier to access its network. However, the SIM card, and its accompanying program, can store contact information for transferring to a second mobile phone. Installing a SIM card into another mobile phone gives the second device access to the card’s contact data and automatically integrates it with the device’s phone book application.
