Screen Shaking Problems on a PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 by Sony is a video game system that includes Blu-ray disc playback, Internet connectivity and online gaming. While the PS3 claims that it "only does everything," it is not without its faults and you may experience errors when using the console. A shaking or resizing screen can be the cause of your PS3 attempting to automatically adjust the display settings.

Check the back of your PlayStation 3 and TV and locate the connections from your PS3 to your TV. Press each of the connections firmly into the the PS3 and TV. If your cable shows any signs of fraying, nicks or cuts, it needs to be replaced with a new cable. Sony recommends using a high-speed HDMI connection to a HDTV and the component video connection for standard CRT TVs.

Video Settings

The PS3 can be display in several different video outputs. The PS3 will attempt to automatically detect the TV that it is connected to and select the most appropriate video output settings. To adjust the video settings manually, navigate to the "Settings" menu on the Xross Media Bar (XMB). Select "Display Settings" and then "Video Output Settings." Choose the type of connection that you are using and whether or not your display is a 4:3 or 16:9 resolution. Typically, standard CRT TVs will use the 4:3 setting and HDTVs will use the 16:9 resolution.

Reset To Default

Setting the PS3 to its default settings can alleviate issues with the PS3 trying to automatically resize the display output. To reset the PS3 to its default settings, navigate to the "Settings" menu on the XMB and select the "System Settings" option. Choose the "Restore Default Settings" option and press the "X" button on the controller to confirm your choice to restore the system to factory defaults.

Screen Saver

The screen saver can cause the display settings on your PS3 to change momentarily as the screensaver turns on. The screensaver can be turned off or set to activate after a certain amount of time on the XMB. Navigate to the "Display Settings" option and select the "Screensaver" option. You have the choice of the screen saver turning on after 5, 10, 20 or 30 minutes if you elect to turn the screen saver on.
