This error can occur in the BlackBerry Browser when you try to access certain websites. “Bad Gateway” errors appear when servers and devices don't agree on a protocol for exchanging data.

The “Bad Gateway” error is a network issue, not a hardware issue. To communicate with a Web server, the BlackBerry Browser first obtains an Internet Protocol address from the URL you have requested to view. The browser then opens an IP socket connection and exchanges an HTTP data stream with the server, which contains status codes necessary to Web browsing. When the BlackBerry Browser receives status code 502, a “Bad Gateway” error appears and you'll be unable to access the requested site. In some cases, this issue occurs when the BlackBerry Browser does not meet the minimum requirements needed to view a particular site.

Fixes

If you receive a “Bad Gateway” error, RIM recommends that you first reboot your mobile device and try to access the site in question one more time. If this method doesn't work, it may be necessary to clear the BlackBerry Browser's cache. To do so, select the “Options” menu from the browser and then click on “Cache Operations.” Choose “Clear Cookie Cache and Clear History” and try accessing the site once again. This method works for BlackBerry Browser versions 4.0 and above.

BlackBerry Support

If rebooting and cache clearing don't do the trick, contact your wireless service provider for assistance. Additionally, RIM offers technical support services. At its official website, the company offers BlackBerry Support Community Forums and a technical support inquiry form. RIM's incident based support program, available at 877-255-2377, offers technical support for a small fee.

Considerations

“Bad Gateway” errors are not exclusive to BlackBerry mobile devices and may occur in browsers on home computer, tablets, notebooks, netbooks, competitor smartphones or any other online-enabled device with browser support. As BlackBerry devices support network services from Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and others, frequency of 502 errors may vary depending on your wireless service provider.
