Jailbreaking your iPad is legal, but voids the device's warranty with Apple.

Apple does not support the Linux operating system with its iTunes multimedia management software, though some users running the Ubuntu version of Linux have successfully installed it on their computers. Jailbreaking tools, which unlock your iPad from iTunes and allow you to use other Ubuntu-based multimedia management packages, are equally difficult to run on Linux-powered computers. The online JailbreakMe tool unlocks an iPad running version 3.2.2 of the iOS operating system -- sometimes written as 322 -- through the device's own Web browser, bypassing the difficulties of jailbreaking with Ubuntu.

Launch iTunes on your Ubuntu computer if you have a working version of the software already installed and operational. Connect the iPad using its USB cable and click the "Sync" button in the lower right corner of the "Summary" tab in iTunes. A backup of the iPad is made on your computer as a safety measure before jailbreaking.

2

Launch the Safari Web browser on the iPad by tapping its icon on the home screen.

3

Navigate to the JailbreakMe website. A listing is displayed for the Cydia application store.

4

Tap the "Free" button in the upper right corner, then tap it again when the text changes to "Install." Cydia is downloaded to your iPad and the jailbreaking process begins.

5

Launch Cydia by tapping its icon once the download has completed. Tap the "Complete Upgrade" button. The latest version of Cydia is downloaded and installed. The iPad reboots to complete the jailbreaking process.

Tips & Warnings

If you don't have iTunes working on your Ubuntu computer, skip the initial sync and backup option. Tools and third-party software are available for the iPad once it is jailbroken that facilitate the use of iTunes alternatives on Ubuntu computers.

If you update or restore your iPad through iTunes its jailbroken status will be lost.
