Not only do today’s smart phones combine many of our daily tools into one gadget, but many users run their work and personal lives from the same device. BlackBerry smart phones offer menu options that cater to those wanting to separate their colleagues from their family and friends, but owners first have to set up categories and learn how to filter views.

Pressing the BlackBerry menu key will bring up additional options in most applications, including your contact list. The menu key is indicated by the BlackBerry logo on all devices, whether touch-screen or QWERTY. To access menus, press the key in any application or after clicking on a block of text to highlight it.

Contact Filters

BlackBerry devices have a built-in capability to filter contacts, whether they’re business or personal. To access, open the Contacts application, which may be called Address Book on older devices, press the menu key and choose “Filter.” You will see options for business and personal; check the boxes of the contact types you’d like to view in your contact list.

Contact Setup

Filtering your contacts requires you first categorize them. When adding someone to your address book, you will find a “Categories” option if you scroll down through your new contact’s information. Select it and a menu will pop up, from which you can select business or personal, then press the menu key and “Save.” Categorize your existing contacts by choosing a name, press the menu key, then “Edit”; after choosing a category, press the menu key to save. In addition to Contacts, the Tasks and Memos applications also allow you to create categories; changes made in any of these three applications will apply to the other two.

Other Categories

To further categorize, choose new names. For example, break down your personal contacts into friends or family, or categorize work friends into management or associates. To create categories, choose “Filters,” as described above, then press the menu key to access “New” and type in a category name. A delete option is found in the same menu.
