Your BlackBerry must be connected to a data network to access emails.

Access to email is one of the most essential functions of any BlackBerry, but the memory capacity of the device will not allow you to keep every message forever. Some BlackBerry phones have a set maximum capacity for the mailbox, and once the maximum is reached no new messages can be received. When a mailbox has no maximum, older messages are automatically cleaned out to make room for new ones.

The maximum capacity of your BlackBerry inbox depends upon the version of your BlackBerry Internet Service. Version 1.8x has a maximum capacity of 25MB, with more storage space available for purchase. If your phone is running version 2x, there is no maximum capacity limit. Version 2x, however, does require that all email messages older than 30 days be automatically removed from the device to free up more space for new messages.

Auto-Aging

One way to conserve space in your BlackBerry mailbox is by using the auto-aging feature. When auto-aging is enabled in the "Manage Folders" menu, all messages older than a set number of days will be moved to the deleted folder on your phone. For instance, when auto-aging is set to 15 days, 16 days after a message is received or sent it is deleted by your BlackBerry. As was aforementioned, BlackBerry devices running 2x BlackBerry Internet Service must have auto-aging enabled and set to 30 days.

Reconciling Wireless BlackBerry Email

If you are using a BlackBerry email address, deleting an email from your device does not automatically remove it from the BlackBerry Internet Service. In order to delete an email from both your device and the BlackBerry Internet Service, you must enable email reconciliation. To reconcile messages, go to the "Messages" application and then the "Options" link. Go to "Email Reconciliation,';;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;" then "Wireless Reconcile" and change the setting to "On."

Eliminate Deleted Items

The messages in your "Deleted" folder will continue to occupy space on your device until they are manually purged. To permanently delete emails, go to the "Messages" application on your BlackBerry and choose "Options." Go to the "Message List Options" and choose "Purge Deleted Items." Completing this process on a regular basis will free up memory on your phone and space in the inbox.
