My BlackBerry Pearl Keeps Saying "SIM Card Error"

0
FoodHomeStyleMoneyFamilyHealthShiftMore This SeasonSimplify the SeasonTailgatingTech Know HomeElectronicsBlackberryBlackberry SIM CardsMy BlackBerry Pearl Keeps Saying "SIM Card Error"My BlackBerry Pearl Keeps Saying "SIM Card Error"Print this articleSome BlackBerry Pearl models are Global System for Mobile Communications, or GSM, devices; they must make use of SIM cards to access their wireless service providers' networks. Although convenient, SIM cards can sometimes malfunction and need to be replaced.

Related Searches: Damage

With time and repeated swapping between devices, a SIM card can become corroded or damaged. This damage can cause a mobile device such as the BlackBerry Pearl to malfunction and fail to connect to your provider’s network. The microchip contained on a SIM card is a highly sensitive piece of circuitry and, if damaged or corroded, can fail to connect to the Pearl’s processor, which causes the device to produce a “SIM card error” prompt. Replacing the SIM card with a new one may resolve the problem.

Installation

Occasionally, a SIM card is inserted into a mobile phone incorrectly, which can produce a “SIM card error” prompt from the BlackBerry Pearl. If the card is placed into the phone’s SIM holder incorrectly, the phone will fail to recognize the card, resulting in an inability to access your carrier’s network. The Pearl’s user manual contains instructions with diagrams that demonstrate the proper way to insert the SIM card. If you do not have access to the device’s manual, a Google search can lead to a copy of the manual or messages from others who are in the same situation.

Carriers

At the time of publication, AT&T and T-Mobile are the only national wireless service providers that operate GSM networks. BlackBerry Pearls serviced by either of these carriers must have SIM cards installed to work properly. If your Pearl was originally purchased from AT&T and you have switched to T-Mobile -- or vice versa -- you must provide the new carrier with the SIM card number to be able to access the provider’s network. If you neglect to provide the new provider with the SIM card number, the Pearl can produce a “SIM card error” prompt when attempting to connect to the new network.

Extreme Conditions

If the BlackBerry Pearl continues to produce a “SIM card error” message, it could be that your provider is experiencing technical difficulties. Occasionally, high network traffic volumes or stormy weather can cause a provider’s network to stop functioning, a condition that can lead to SIM card errors. Waiting for the storm to pass or for traffic to subside is your only option in these types of situations.

My BlackBerry Curve Has Volume Problems

0
Print this articleVolume problems on your BlackBerry Curve may be attributed to an issue with your phone's software. If you have checked your settings and the problems persist, you have a few available options for troubleshooting the problem. Persistent problems may require technical assistance from your service provider.

Related Searches: Hard Reset

Hard reset your BlackBerry Curve if it has volume problems. When you hard reset the phone, it does not affect the phone's settings or data, but can help it to reload all of its necessary functions. Hard reset the Curve by pulling the battery while it is on. Wait for 30 to 45 seconds and replace the battery in your phone. Check the phone's volume to determine if the problem was resolved.

Restore Phone

Continued volume problems on the Curve smartphone may call for a complete restoration. When you restore the phone, a previously backed up version of the phone is loaded onto the phone. Any data that has not been backed up will be lost. Open the BlackBerry Desktop Software application on your computer. Connect your phone to the computer with a USB cable. Click “Device” in the top menu, and click “Back Up.” The onscreen prompts will guide you through restoring your phone.

Reload Software

If the Curve's volume problems persist, completely wiping your phone and reloading its software can potentially help. Volume problems that result from an issue within the software are usually resolved when the phone is wiped clean and the software is reloaded. Connect the Curve to your computer and open BlackBerry Desktop Software. Click “Device” in the application's menu, and then click “Update.” Select the version of software you want to install and follow the onscreen prompts.

Replacement Phone

Hardware issues with your BlackBerry Curve that are causing volume problems may not be easily resolved. In most cases, your service provider may opt to replace your phone. If the Curve is covered by mobile insurance, the replacement is usually covered. If the phone's volume problems are the result of misuse, your service provider may require you to pay a deductible. Contact your service provider for additional help with getting a replacement phone.

I Can't Get My BlackBerry Curve WiFi to Work

0
FoodHomeStyleMoneyFamilyHealthShiftMore This SeasonSimplify the SeasonTailgatingTech Know HomeElectronicsBlackberryBlackberry CurveI Can't Get My BlackBerry Curve WiFi to WorkI Can't Get My BlackBerry Curve WiFi to WorkPrint this articleYour BlackBerry Curve is one of the phones in the BlackBerry family that has WiFi capabilities. Previously, a cell phone signal was required to connect to the Internet, but having WiFi access offers faster speeds and more functionality. If your BlackBerry Curve isn't connecting to a WiFi network, perform a simple setup to allow your phone to connect to available wireless networks. Once you've altered your settings, your BlackBerry Curve should connect to a WiFi network automatically.

Related Searches: Turn WiFi On

To allow your BlackBerry Curve to connect to an available WiFi network, you must first set up the WiFi capabilities on your phone. Start by touching "Manage Connections" from your home screen, then ensure that your "Wi-Fi" check box is filled with a check mark. This enables your Curve to start scanning for a signal so you're able to connect once it detects one. Note that all of the BlackBerry Curve models have WIFi capabilities, except for the 8500 model which operates only on the cellular network and cannot connect to a wireless network.

WiFi Setup

Once your WiFi has been successfully turned on, set up a WiFi connection so your Curve can scan for available networks, then apply proper settings -- such as the password -- to each specific network to allow a connection. Touch "Manage Connections" and then "Set Up Wi-Fi Network." After your phone scans and finds a connection, authorize the connection. You might need to enter a password if the WiFi connection is protected. When you create a new connection, it appears at the bottom of your priority list. To move a new connection to the top of the list, select "Prioritize Wi-Fi Profiles," then select which connection you'd like your phone to try first. Your Curve works down the list of available networks in order of priority to establish a secure connection.

Troubleshooting

If you've properly turned on and set up your Curve's WiFi capabilities and you still can't connect to the Internet via a WiFi connection, your settings could be incorrect. Check each of your available WiFi connections to ensure that passwords have been entered correctly and that your Curve has been set to automatically connect to available networks. Once your WiFi has the proper information for setup, it should connect. If it still doesn't connect, take it to the store where you purchased it for service.

WiFi Issues

If all of your settings are right, your WiFi is turned on and your Curve doesn't detect any wireless networks, it could be an issue with the wireless signal, not your phone. Make sure that you're within 150 to 180 feet of the wireless router, and avoid interference such as other wireless devices and concrete. If your Curve cannot detect a wireless network, you cannot connect to WiFi, regardless of your phone's settings.

My BlackBerry SIM Card Has an Error Message

0
Print this articleBlackBerry mobile devices that are designed for use on a Global System for Mobile Communications, or GSM, network need a Subscriber Identity Module card to gain access to a wireless service provider’s network. Under certain situations, the SIM card can produce an error message that prevents the device from connecting to its provider’s network. Most of these situations are easily fixed.

Related Searches: Installation

One of the most common causes of a BlackBerry device’s SIM card producing an error message involves how the card is installed. Some users are unsure of how the card fits into the phone, installing it backwards or upside down, which can produce an error message and prevent the device from connecting to its network. Your BlackBerry’s user manual contains detailed information with diagrams on how to install the card properly. If you no longer have access to the user manual, you may be able to find a copy online or at least find message boards that have posts from others in your predicament.

Card Condition

Frequently transferring a SIM card from one device to another increases the chances of damaging the card, which can cause an error message to appear on your BlackBerry device. The SIM card stores important personal information, such as the BlackBerry’s phone number and the user’s account number, which is needed for the wireless service provider to identify the phone and grant it access to its network. If the card is scratched or otherwise damaged, the phone’s processor will be unable to access this data and transmit it to the network. If you suspect your BlackBerry’s SIM card has been damaged, request a replacement from your service provider.

Network Issues

Occasionally, severe weather or excessive network traffic can cause your BlackBerry to fail to connect to its network, which may produce a SIM card error message. Typically, when these conditions arise, a cell tower either diverts cellular transmissions to nearby towers for faster transmission or retains the transmission until the conditions are rectified. Occasionally, however, these conditions can cause the tower to fail to receive transmissions at all, a situation in which your BlackBerry may identify as being caused by the SIM card. Waiting for the condition to clear is the most effective way to deal with these situations.

Technology

Some mobile devices, including BlackBerrys, are designed to support SIM cards that were manufactured during the same time period and for the same type of network. If your BlackBerry is newer than the SIM card it contains, there’s a possibility the card is too outdated to work with the phone, which will also produce a SIM card error message. Some SIM cards are designed only to work with 2G network technology, while others are designed to work only with 3G network technology. On the other hand, some SIM cards are designed for a newer network, but are backward-compliant with previous networks.

Why Doesn't the Light Come on My Blackberry Storm When I Get a Text?

0
FoodHomeStyleMoneyFamilyHealthShiftMore This SeasonSimplify the SeasonTailgatingTech Know HomeElectronicsBlackberryBlackberry StormWhy Doesn't the Light Come on My Blackberry Storm When I Get a Text? Why Doesn't the Light Come on My Blackberry Storm When I Get a Text?Print this articleYour BlackBerry Storm gives you a pretty wide set of options when it comes to how the device notifies you of incoming calls, email and texts. If the LED isn't blinking when you get a text message, and the LED is still working, it's probably because you have the device set up to not give a visual indicator for incoming messages.

Related Searches: BlackBerry Profiles

Your BlackBerry Storm's sound profiles determine how the device reacts in all sorts of situations. Each sound profile contains a list of possible events, like incoming phone calls, incoming texts, and even incoming instant messages, and then assigns specific ring tones, vibrate rules and LED notification to those events. The Storm comes with a handful of default profiles like "Normal," "Loud," "Vibrate Only" and "All Alerts Off," but you can adjust the settings of each of these profiles to your liking, or can create your own profile.

Editing a Profile

To access your profiles, so you can check how they handle your LED notification, select the speaker icon on the Storm's main screen, which will open the "Select a Sound Profile" menu. Scroll to the bottom of the menu and choose "Edit Profiles," then select your desired profile from the list. Choose the "Messages" option and then "SMS." Finally, select the option next to "LED" and change it to "On." Press the "Menu" button and choose "Save" to save your changes.

Contact Alerts

Even if your current sound profile has the LED set to go off when you get a text message, if you have a contact alert set up for the person sending you the test, the light may still not go off. Contact alerts are simply a special sound profile for a single contact, which will override that device's overall sound profile (except for the "All Alerts Off" profile). To check your contact alerts, choose "Set Contact Alerts" from the bottom of the "Select a Sound Profile" menu, then choose the contact and adjust the settings as needed.

Additional Concerns

If the LED indicator still does not work after you have turned the indicator on within the sound profile, there may be a deeper issue either with the device's software or with the actual LED. Plug your BlackBerry Storm into its charger and observe the LED. If it doesn't flash, there may be a hardware issue with the LED and your BlackBerry will need to be replaced. If the LED works when you plug the device into the charger, but still will never flash when you get a text, your next option is to wipe the device and return it to its factory default settings. You can wipe the device from the "Security" area of the "Options" menu, but be aware that this will erase all of your information. If the security wipe doesn't fix the issue, then your only remaining recourse is to replace the device.

The "End" Button on my Blackberry Storm Will Not Work

0

When the button is experiencing problems, it could be the result of a bug in the phone's software or a function causing it to malfunction. Do not attempt to take apart the phone's keypad. Doing so could potentially void its warranty.

Related Searches: Hard Reset

Hard reset your BlackBerry Storm if the "End" button will not work. Perform a reset pulling the battery out of the phone without turning it off first. The reset forces the phone to reload its software and possibly resolve an issue causing it to not work. The reset is a common troubleshooting step that does not affect the phone or its settings. Leave the battery out for about 30 seconds before replacing it.

Reload Device Software

Use BlackBerry Desktop Software to reload the Storm's device software if the "End" button continues to not work. Before reloading the software, back up any data files that you do not want to lose. Any files that are not backed up will be permanently lost. Access the device settings in "Desktop Software" and select the option to reload the software. The available software will be displayed. Select your device's current software and reload it.

Update Phone

The issue with the button may be related to a bug that has a fix available through an update. Connect your phone to the computer to update it through "Desktop Software." Updates are available through the device settings in the application. You can update to any available version of the phone. The contents of the update will be displayed so that you can decide which one to use.

Replacement Phone

Due to the potential hardware issues with the Storm smartphone, your service provider may opt to replace the phone if troubleshooting does not resolving the "End" button issue. When the provider makes a determination of what is causing the issue, the cost of a replacement will be provided. In most instances, if the Storm's issue is related to hardware, the replacement phone will be provided at no charge.

Call Blocking on the BlackBerry Curve 8830

0
Print this articleThe BlackBerry 8830 lacks native call screening and call blocking functionality. You can purchase and download a call screening app from BlackBerry App World. There are a number of different apps with various features and price tags. You can download these apps from BlackBerry App World to your computer and then install them to your BlackBerry 8830 with BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Alternatively, you can install the BlackBerry App World app on your 8830 and purchase and install apps from within the App World app. Your BlackBerry must be running version 4.5 or higher of the BlackBerry Device Software before you can install the BlackBerry App World app.

Related Searches: Call Blocker Professional

Call Blocker Professional automatically answers and hangs up on incoming calls or sends them directly to voicemail. You can set a custom schedule to allow calls at certain times or exclude them at others. The app will allow calls based on a set list of acceptable callers, numbers in your contact list, listed numbers or numbers that you've called before. You can also set the app to automatically send a text message to blocked callers with a customized message. At the time of publication, Call Blocker Professional is available for $2.99 from BlackBerry App World.

Callernizer II

Callernizer II can use a blacklist to prevent specific callers from reaching your phone or a whitelist to prevent all callers except those in the list from reaching you. Callernizer II sends custom text messages to blocked callers. The app also includes an urgency detection system. When urgency detection is enabled a caller will be connected if they attempt to call you a set number of times within a defined time span. Callernizer II is available as a 15-day free trial or a $2.99 complete version from BlackBerry App World.

BuzzOff

BuzzOff uses blacklist blocking to prevent unknown, private or blacklisted numbers from reaching your phone. The app automatically answers and hangs up on blacklisted callers to prevent them from leaving a voicemail. You can also blacklist callers based on the first numbers in their number. For example, you can block all "1-800" callers. BuzzOff is available for $1.99 from BlackBerry App World.

Antair Call Screener

At $29.99 from BlackBerry App World, Antair Call Screener is one of the most expensive call screening applications, but it features advanced profile settings that can make it worth the price to some users. Antiair Call Screener can send incoming calls to voicemail based on a blacklist, whitelist, private numbers, unknown numbers, contact list numbers or numbers from a specific location. Antair allows you to define different profiles to block or accept callers based on different profiles. You can quickly and easily switch between profiles from Antair's menu.

My BlackBerry Storm Menu Key Does Not Work

0
Print this articleWhen the "Menu" key on a BlackBerry Storm stops working, a bug could be causing the phone to malfunction. If you have checked for bits of debris around the key and removed any particles observed yet the problem remains, you can try several troubleshooting steps. None of these procedures will affect your phone's warranty.

Related Searches: Hard Reset

If an application or process is causing the Menu key on your BlackBerry phone to be non-responsive, a hard reset of the device may clear the problem. A reset stops all of the running applications and restarts the phone with only the processes necessary for the device to function. Remove the Storm's battery while it is powered on to reset the smartphone. Wait at least 30 seconds before sliding the battery back into the phone. Check the Menu key to see if it is working when the phone restarts.

Update Software

Problems with the Storm's keys can be software-related. Updating the device software on your BlackBerry may bring a dead menu key back to life. The Desktop Software application shipped with your BlackBerry is used to perform updates. If this app is not already installed on your computer, download it from the BlackBerry website. Always download the latest version of the software to install.

Clean Reload

If the Menu key still doesn’t work, perform a fresh reload of the BlackBerry Storm's software. This procedure will wipe and reinstall the phone's software. Before doing this, however, back up the data on the phone, including your contacts. Once you have erased this information, you won't be able to retrieve it. When you connect the Storm to your computer, open the Desktop Software application. Click “Device” at the top of the application and select the option to reload the software.

Replacement Phone

If the problem with your Menu key persists after reloading the phone’s software, a hardware issue may be the culprit. In most cases, your service provider will opt to replace the phone rather than repair it. The phone you’ll receive will most likely be a refurbished phone. If your provider determines that the Menu key was damaged by misuse, you may have to pay for either the replacement or a deductible if you have insurance.

How to Replace the Backlight on a BlackBerry Curve

0
Print this articleThe backlight on the BlackBerry Curve smartphone is what illuminates the LCD screen, and like all smartphone backlights, it's likely to burn out. Although the backlight and LCD are two separate components, they often are sold together and replaced simultaneously, because it's difficult to separate the two without causing damage. You can replace a BlackBerry Curve's burned out backlight yourself, but if you do, you'll void your Curve’s warranty.

Related Searches:Difficulty:Moderately ChallengingInstructions Things You'll NeedReplacement screenPlastic prying toolTorx screwdriver kitSuggest Edits1

Purchase a replacement screen and backlight for your Curve. You can find a replacement at an online store or at a local electronics retailer.

2

Shut off your Curve by pressing and holding the “Hang Up” button. Remove the battery cover and battery, and set them aside.

3

Remove the plastic piece on the bottom of the BlackBerry Curve, using a plastic prying tool. Insert the tool into the empty battery compartment, and pry the plastic off carefully.

4

Remove the screws on the back of the Curve, using a Torx screwdriver. Insert the screwdriver into each screw hole, and turn it counterclockwise until the screws are removed.

5

Run a plastic prying tool along the Blackberry Curve’s outer edge, working it into the crease between the face plate and the back plate. Gently remove the face plate.

6

Remove the screws holding the keyboard panel in place, using a Torx screwdriver. Set the keyboard aside.

7

Pry off the BlackBerry Curve's plastic edges, using your fingers. Set them aside. Lift the smartphone’s components out of the back piece, then remove the plastic bevel from around the screen, using your fingers.

8

Lift the plastic flap holding the screen’s ribbon, which is directly above the LCD, using your fingernail or the plastic prying tool. Remove the screen by lifting it with the plastic prying tool.

9

Place the new screen on the BlackBerry Curve. Insert its ribbon into the ribbon slot, and press the plastic flap into place.

10

Reassemble the Curve by reversing the disassembly steps.

Blackberry Curve Has No Lightning Bolt When Charging

0
Print this articleWhen you plug your BlackBerry Curve smartphone into an electrical outlet, you expect the see a lightning bolt appear over the battery symbol, which symbolizes that the battery is charging. If you don't see the lightning bolt, the issue can stem from any number of sources.

Related Searches: Software Glitch

Sometimes the issue may just be a software glitch that causes the lightning bolt to not appear, even though the battery is charging normally. Removing the battery for a few seconds and then replacing it may clear up the issue, but regardless, allow the Curve to sit for a few hours to see if the battery is actually taking a charge. If your BlackBerry battery is already fully charged, the lightning bolt won't appear as there is no need to charge the battery.

Battery or Charger Issue

If your Curve's battery isn't actually charging, the most obvious culprits are the battery and the charger. Unfortunately, without another BlackBerry charger or battery, it's impossible to determine where the issue lies. If you have a spare battery or charger, replace your Curve's battery and charger, one at a time, and see if the lightning bolt appears. As an alternative to a charger, you can use a USB data cable and connect your BlackBerry to a USB port on your computer, as most computer USB ports provide power to whatever is plugged into them.

Charging Port Issue

If the Curve continues to have issues after replacing the battery and charger, the issue usually lies in the charging port itself. The port is connected to the control board by four small solder joints, and if these joints fail the port can become loose and no longer have a solid connection to the control board. The easiest way to test the port is to wiggle the charger back and forth and see if the lightning bolt appears when you do so. If the port is loose, you can attempt to take the Curve apart and solder the port back in place, although if your device is under warranty it is better to go through your wireless provider and get a replacement.

Internal Failure

If you can't determine a cause for the lightning bolt not showing up, the issue is with the Curve's internal hardware and you need to get the device replaced. If your Curve is under warranty, contact your wireless carrier and procure a replacement. If the device is not under warranty, but you have insurance, contact your insurance company to get a replacement. If you have neither a warranty nor insurance, you have to purchase another device.

Why Does My Blackberry Keep Having an Hourglass?

0
Personal email does not require the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Flag this photo

The hourglass on a BlackBerry is a dreaded sight, as it indicates that your phone is not responding. You may see an hourglass because an application overwhelmed the available memory on your device, or because of an application glitch. If you repeatedly see the hourglass when using the same application, remove it or check for an application update. The hourglass will also reappear in older software after an IT policy update.

Related Searches: Updated IT Policy

Corporate emails are delivered to a BlackBerry device using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. When your company's IT department updates an existing policy, BlackBerrys with software version 4.1 may continue to receive a message about the update every five minutes. Each time the update message is received, an hourglass will appear on the BlackBerry screen. This issue can be resolved by updating to a newer version of the software, as versions 5.0 or later do not experience this glitch.

Applications

Like any cellphone, a BlackBerry device has an internal hard drive. If a large BlackBerry application overwhelms the phone, or the available flash memory is low, it may freeze. The hourglass icon is used to indicate a hard drive problem, much like a spinning wheel indicates an unresponsive hard drive on a Mac or PC computer.

Hard Reset

If your BlackBerry is stuck on the hourglass icon for more than a few minutes, the phone will not reboot until you manually force it to do so. The first thing to try when your BlackBerry is frozen with the hourglass icon is a hard reset. To perform a hard reset, remove the battery from your BlackBerry and then reinsert it after a few seconds. The device should reboot as usual.

Clean Reload

A clean reload should only be completed when a hard reset does not fix the hourglass problem. To perform a clean reload, connect your BlackBerry to your computer and open BlackBerry Desktop Software. After going to the "Device" menu, choose "Update" and go to "View Other Versions" in the bottom left corner of the screen. Choose your current software update and click "Update." When prompted, select any update options and then click "Install." Your software will be reloaded to the device and wipe out the hourglass.

What to Do If USB Is Not Recognized for Blackberry Curve

0
Print this articleThe USB cord provided with your BlackBerry Curve both charges and syncs the handset. If your device won't recognize the USB, your phone won't sync or charge. Problems with the USB could stem from the operating system, device or the USB cable.

Related Searches: Update Software

Since BlackBerry periodically releases updates for the BlackBerry operating system, the software on your device can become outdated. Outdated software can cause syncing issues between the device and your computer. You must also have the correct drivers and the BlackBerry desktop software installed to sync. Check the BlackBerry App World for updates for your Curve and install the most recent version of the desktop software on your computer.

Hardware Damage

The BlackBerry Curve has a miniUSB connector. The connector is somewhat fragile and can get damaged. For example, dropping your phone onto a hard surface can cause damage to the connector. Generally, the prongs inside the connector become loose, and the device won't recognize a USB cable when you plug it in. However, if the device has never recognized the charger, the handset itself may be faulty.

USB Damage

If the USB cord has any damage, it will not work properly. Damage to the cord can include tears or frays along the cord itself, or damage to the prongs inside the USB connector ports. Check the USB cord for damage before connecting your Curve. If the prongs are bent, or the wiring itself has rips, you will have to replace the cord. BlackBerry sells replacement accessories. You can also buy replacement accessories through your wireless provider.

Tips

BlackBerry has a limited one year warranty for the Curve device. Under the warranty, BlackBerry will repair or replace the hardware free of charge. If your USB connector was damaged at the factory, you can file a claim with BlackBerry. However, filing a claim will cause the warranty to expire quickly. Once repaired, the warranty expires 91 days after the date of repair, according to BlackBerry.

My BlackBerry Torch Menu Has No Back Light

0
The keyboard on the BlackBerry Torch is reached by sliding the screen up.

Flag this photo

The BlackBerry Torch is one in the series of BlackBerry devices. If your Torch does not have a backlight, the most likely reason is the way you have set the screen display settings. Settings are easily changed to allow for more backlighting. Bear in mind that the backlight does consume battery life.

Related Searches: Backlight Function

The backlight on a BlackBerry helps you see the contents of the screen, including the main menu. The feature is especially helpful in environments with poor lighting or, conversely, when too much natural light reflects off the screen. Lengthy backlighting drains the battery on your device. As a result, BlackBerry lets users adjust the backlight settings to extend battery life.

Automatic Dim

If your BlackBerry backlight is set to dim automatically, the backlight will turn itself off when the device detects enough light to view the screen. To check the automatic dim settings, go the "Options" or "All" icon on your BlackBerry home screen, depending on your service provider. If you have an "All" icon, select "Setup." Choose "Display" and then "Screen Display," and uncheck the box next to "Automatically Dim Backlight" if you don't want the backlight to disappear based on lighting conditions.

Timeout

The backlight timeout function turns off the backlight after a specific period of inactivity. The amount of time that passes before your backlight goes out can be adjusted by going to the "Options" or "All" menu and choosing "Display" and then "Screen Display." Use the drop-down menu next to "Backlight Timeout" to set how much time passes before the backlight disappears. You can set timeout to as few as ten seconds, or up to two minutes.

Defective Parts

If you adjust the backlight settings to stop automatic dim and extend the timeout period, and still don't see a backlight, you may have a defective BlackBerry. Consult with your wireless carrier to have your device repaired or exchange it for a new one.

That doesn't mean the theme can't reflect your personality; download a theme with a design in your favorite color, such as the free Mellow Yellow theme, or with an image you find comforting, such as a raindrop hitting a puddle of water in the Liquid Theme, which is $3 as of the date of publication.

Sports

If you need to express your loyalty to your favorite college or professional sports team through your BlackBerry Storm's display screen, find many to choose from in the App World starting at $6. You can add international teams, such as an English soccer flag, or generic sports themes, such as the Baseball theme for $1.

  • Unable to Install Themes on My BlackBerry

    0
Themes allow you to add a bit of personality to your phone.

    Flag this photo

Themes give you a way to customize your BlackBerry by assigning coordinating wallpaper, screensaver and other accessories. Technically, themes are third-party applications. This means they are created outside the original software package, but work with the phone's operating system. If you have problems, there are a few common errors associated with installing themes that may explain why.

    Related Searches: Compatibility

Not every theme is compatible with every model BlackBerry phone. A theme that fails to install may not work on your phone. When you select a theme that fits your personal style, review the details and find out if it works on your phone. This is critical to a successful download and installation. If you try to force a theme not compatible with the operating system on your phone, it will not recognize the program.

    Download

Themes come from many different websites, and not all of them are properly set up. There is always the possibility that the download problem is from the source, not your phone. Try downloading a theme directly from your service provider or BlackBerry. If that fails to load as well, then you may have issues with your phone. If a second theme works, then you can assume the problem is at the source of the download.

    Active Theme

Once you download a theme to your phone, you may need to make it active. To do this, open the "Options" menu on your phone. Once you open Options, look for "Themes" or "Screen Display" to activate the theme. Highlight the downloaded theme on the list and hit the "Select" key. This will change the phone from your current theme to the new one.

    Over-the-Air Programming

OTA is an acronym you might run across when searching for themes. OTA stands for over-the-air programming. This is a fancy way of saying you must view the theme and then download from your phone. You cannot download it to a computer and transfer over to the phone. With your BlackBerry, open the website that has the theme you want on the phone. Follow the instructions on the site to download the theme and install it.

The Size Limit of the BlackBerry Mailbox

    0
Your BlackBerry must be connected to a data network to access emails.

    Flag this photo

Access to email is one of the most essential functions of any BlackBerry, but the memory capacity of the device will not allow you to keep every message forever. Some BlackBerry phones have a set maximum capacity for the mailbox, and once the maximum is reached no new messages can be received. When a mailbox has no maximum, older messages are automatically cleaned out to make room for new ones.

    Related Searches: Mailbox Capacity

The maximum capacity of your BlackBerry inbox depends upon the version of your BlackBerry Internet Service. Version 1.8x has a maximum capacity of 25MB, with more storage space available for purchase. If your phone is running version 2x, there is no maximum capacity limit. Version 2x, however, does require that all email messages older than 30 days be automatically removed from the device to free up more space for new messages.

    Auto-Aging

One way to conserve space in your BlackBerry mailbox is by using the auto-aging feature. When auto-aging is enabled in the "Manage Folders" menu, all messages older than a set number of days will be moved to the deleted folder on your phone. For instance, when auto-aging is set to 15 days, 16 days after a message is received or sent it is deleted by your BlackBerry. As was aforementioned, BlackBerry devices running 2x BlackBerry Internet Service must have auto-aging enabled and set to 30 days.

    Reconciling Wireless BlackBerry Email

If you are using a BlackBerry email address, deleting an email from your device does not automatically remove it from the BlackBerry Internet Service. In order to delete an email from both your device and the BlackBerry Internet Service, you must enable email reconciliation. To reconcile messages, go to the "Messages" application and then the "Options" link. Go to "Email Reconciliation,';;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;" then "Wireless Reconcile" and change the setting to "On."

    Eliminate Deleted Items

The messages in your "Deleted" folder will continue to occupy space on your device until they are manually purged. To permanently delete emails, go to the "Messages" application on your BlackBerry and choose "Options." Go to the "Message List Options" and choose "Purge Deleted Items." Completing this process on a regular basis will free up memory on your phone and space in the inbox.

    My BlackBerry Email Cannot Transmit

    0
Print this articleYour BlackBerry’s inability to transmit email can be caused by an assortment of reasons, some that you can fix and others that you cannot. Your device relies on an Internet connection to a Post Office Protocol, Internet Message Access Protocol or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol server for sending and receiving email.

    Related Searches: Settings

If your phone is unable to transmit email, it may have lost its network connection. Most BlackBerry devices’ network settings default to the connected position, but sometimes these settings can inadvertently become disabled. Checking your phone’s settings, which are accessible from the device’s home screen, will give you the ability to reactivate or enable network connectivity. Most BlackBerrys connect to the 2G or 3G wireless networks, or both, and are compatible with Wi-Fi settings. You can use each of these connections to send and receive email, but will experience problems if the BlackBerry’s connection is not established.

    Network Problems

High network traffic volume, power outages and stormy weather can cause a mobile phone, such as a BlackBerry, to fail to send and receive cellular transmissions, including email. In these conditions, cell towers, which act as cellular transmission relay stations, will either retain the transmission until the condition has been resolved or will attempt to divert the transmission to a nearby tower. If the tower holds on to the transmission, it will appear as if your email has been sent, but the message will not arrive at its destination until the tower has sent the transmission. If the tower attempts to divert the transmission, you may experience a failure to transmit prompt. In these situations, all that you can do is wait for the condition to be resolved on its own.

    Wi-Fi Issues

Connecting to the Internet through your BlackBerry’s Wi-Fi feature requires a wireless router that has a wired connection to a phone or cable line. Most routers have a limit in relation to how many devices it can provide Internet access to, which are typically five. Each Wi-Fi router’s Internet connection has access to a limited amount of bandwidth. As this bandwidth’s capacity is neared or reached, transmissions can become sluggish, which could cause your BlackBerry to fail to transmit email. Occasionally, the Internet service provider’s overall network traffic can also affect subscribers’ Internet performance, which could become slow or non-existent for a period of time. Disconnecting some of the router’s connected devices may help you successfully transmit email through this mode.

    Considerations

POP, SMTP and IMAP servers can become overwhelmed with network traffic or may experience technical difficulties; if that happens, they will fail to work or will crash. When this happens, your BlackBerry will be unable to transmit email messages. If your email issues persist, sending messages via the device’s messaging feature, which supports text and multimedia messages, can help circumvent the situation until the email problems have been resolved.

  • Blackberry Reconciliation Options

    0
Reconciliation on the BlackBerry can put deleted messages into your computer email application's "Deleted" folder.

    Flag this photo

Reconciliation is the process by which the email inbox on your computer syncs up with the email folder on your BlackBerry. For example, messages you have deleted from your BlackBerry device are also put into the "Deleted" folder on your computer's email application. The easiest way to reconcile your email is by automatically reconciling wirelessly.

    Related Searches: Wireless

Wireless reconciliation lets you manage your email accounts without connecting your BlackBerry device to a computer. By default, wireless reconciliation is turned on. If it has been disabled, however, you can enable the service by going to the "Message" application and selecting "Options." Click on the the "Email Reconciliation" line and toggle the setting to the "On" position. Your device now reconciles email messages every 30 minutes, as long as your phone is on and connected to the data network.

    Wired

When your BlackBerry is reconciled over a wired connection, emails are only reconciled when the device is attached to your computer and the BlackBerry Desktop Manager is on. By default, automatic reconciliation is turned on, so each time you connect your BlackBerry to your computer, the emails are always reconciled without your intervention. If automatic reconciliation is not enabled, go to the "Synchronize" menu on the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and check the box next to "Reconcile Messages" and "Automatic Synchronization."

    Manual Reconciliation

If you do not want your email folders to reconcile on a regular basis, there is a way to reconcile messages manually once automatic reconciliation has been disabled. To reconcile messages wirelessly, go to the "Messages" application and open the menu. Click the "Reconcile Now" link to initiate a reconciliation of your email folders. When your BlackBerry is attached to a computer, go to the "Synchronize" option in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and check the box next to "Reconcile Messages." Choose "Synchronize Now" to start a reconciliation.

    Considerations

Depending on your email provider, not all of your messages may be reconciled. For instance, if you are an AOL email customer, sent messages are not reconciled. In other cases, such as with Microsoft Hotmail, the read/unread status of emails is synced from your BlackBerry to the email inbox on your computer, but the status is not synced the other way around. For instance, when you read an email in Hotmail on your computer, your BlackBerry will still list it as unread.

How to Send on Behalf With a BlackBerry

    0

One benefit of BES is that you can send an email message to another individual on the behalf of another BlackBerry user. When the email recipient receives a third-party message, the “From” field reads “Sent On Behalf Of” along with the name of the individual the message is sent for.
