Blackberry Reconciliation Options

Reconciliation on the BlackBerry can put deleted messages into your computer email application's "Deleted" folder.

Reconciliation is the process by which the email inbox on your computer syncs up with the email folder on your BlackBerry. For example, messages you have deleted from your BlackBerry device are also put into the "Deleted" folder on your computer's email application. The easiest way to reconcile your email is by automatically reconciling wirelessly.

Wireless reconciliation lets you manage your email accounts without connecting your BlackBerry device to a computer. By default, wireless reconciliation is turned on. If it has been disabled, however, you can enable the service by going to the "Message" application and selecting "Options." Click on the the "Email Reconciliation" line and toggle the setting to the "On" position. Your device now reconciles email messages every 30 minutes, as long as your phone is on and connected to the data network.

Wired

When your BlackBerry is reconciled over a wired connection, emails are only reconciled when the device is attached to your computer and the BlackBerry Desktop Manager is on. By default, automatic reconciliation is turned on, so each time you connect your BlackBerry to your computer, the emails are always reconciled without your intervention. If automatic reconciliation is not enabled, go to the "Synchronize" menu on the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and check the box next to "Reconcile Messages" and "Automatic Synchronization."

Manual Reconciliation

If you do not want your email folders to reconcile on a regular basis, there is a way to reconcile messages manually once automatic reconciliation has been disabled. To reconcile messages wirelessly, go to the "Messages" application and open the menu. Click the "Reconcile Now" link to initiate a reconciliation of your email folders. When your BlackBerry is attached to a computer, go to the "Synchronize" option in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and check the box next to "Reconcile Messages." Choose "Synchronize Now" to start a reconciliation.

Considerations

Depending on your email provider, not all of your messages may be reconciled. For instance, if you are an AOL email customer, sent messages are not reconciled. In other cases, such as with Microsoft Hotmail, the read/unread status of emails is synced from your BlackBerry to the email inbox on your computer, but the status is not synced the other way around. For instance, when you read an email in Hotmail on your computer, your BlackBerry will still list it as unread.
