All auto and manual focus lenses made by Nikon since 1959 will work on the FE camera, according to professional photographer and Nikon expert Ken Rockwell. In fact, only Nikon's G lenses will not work on FE cameras, so you can be sure that most Nikon lenses you buy will fit on your FE camera.
Auto vs. Manual FocusAuto focus lenses allow any photographer to shoot a focused and sharp image. The lenses automatically focus on your subject when you activate the focus feature, typically by holding the shutter button down. Manual focus lenses, on the other hand, require you to focus the image the old fashioned way -- by turning the lens until your image is in focus. While Nikon offers several AF lenses, the company specialized in manual focus lenses, according to Ken Rockwell.
Nikon FE CamerasAt time of publication, there are three different Nikon FE camera models. The original FE was the only FE model until 1984, when the FE-2 was released. The FE-10 was introduced in 1997. All three models are similar, just with an updated look and more modern features, such as faster shutter speeds.
LensesA variety of lenses work on the Nikon FE cameras, including single-lens reflex (SLR) lenses. For example, Nikon makes 24 SLR lenses designed for landscape and travel photography; 22 SLR lenses designed for portraits or event photography; 28 SLR lenses designed for shooting sports and action shots; 10 macro SLR lenses designed for macro (close up) photography; and a variety of special purpose lenses such as fisheye lenses.
