The BlackBerry Torch is one in the series of BlackBerry devices. If your Torch does not have a backlight, the most likely reason is the way you have set the screen display settings. Settings are easily changed to allow for more backlighting. Bear in mind that the backlight does consume battery life.

The backlight on a BlackBerry helps you see the contents of the screen, including the main menu. The feature is especially helpful in environments with poor lighting or, conversely, when too much natural light reflects off the screen. Lengthy backlighting drains the battery on your device. As a result, BlackBerry lets users adjust the backlight settings to extend battery life.

Automatic Dim

If your BlackBerry backlight is set to dim automatically, the backlight will turn itself off when the device detects enough light to view the screen. To check the automatic dim settings, go the "Options" or "All" icon on your BlackBerry home screen, depending on your service provider. If you have an "All" icon, select "Setup." Choose "Display" and then "Screen Display," and uncheck the box next to "Automatically Dim Backlight" if you don't want the backlight to disappear based on lighting conditions.

Timeout

The backlight timeout function turns off the backlight after a specific period of inactivity. The amount of time that passes before your backlight goes out can be adjusted by going to the "Options" or "All" menu and choosing "Display" and then "Screen Display." Use the drop-down menu next to "Backlight Timeout" to set how much time passes before the backlight disappears. You can set timeout to as few as ten seconds, or up to two minutes.

Defective Parts

If you adjust the backlight settings to stop automatic dim and extend the timeout period, and still don't see a backlight, you may have a defective BlackBerry. Consult with your wireless carrier to have your device repaired or exchange it for a new one.
