My BlackBerry Emails Get Deleted After Reading

Sending email requires the use of a data network.

BlackBerry users often find the email application imperative -- the application forwards messages from a computer email application to your device so you can read and reply to them. When emails go missing, it is usually because your device is low on memory or your settings are set to delete old emails.

BlackBerry devices have a finite amount of memory space available. When your phone starts to reach its memory limit, it will automatically begin to delete low-priority data, including old emails that have already been read. Your BlackBerry will not ask for your permission to delete emails or alert you to the action. Keeping ample memory space available on your BlackBerry will reduce the likelihood of emails suddenly disappearing.

Freeing Up Memory

To free up more memory on your BlackBerry, you can manually erase old emails that you don't need anymore. Similarly, erasing applications or calls in your call log will free up more space. Set your calendar to delete all previous events after 60 days, or manually delete them after you no longer need the information. Sometimes BlackBerry devices are equipped with sample languages and videos, which can also be removed if they are not used.

Automatic Deletion Settings

If you have ample space in your BlackBerry, your emails may be disappearing because you have set them to automatically delete after a set number of days. This feature is the default setting on BlackBerry -- messages are removed after 30 days once they have been opened and read at least once. Emails can be saved forever by changing email storage settings.

Changing Deletion Settings

To save email messages for a longer period of time, or indefinitely, go to the "Messages" application on your BlackBerry and then choose the "Menu" key. Click "Options" and then select "General Options." After scrolling to the "Keep Messages" line, choose "Forever" if you don't want the emails to disappear after a set number of days. Keep in mind that if you don't manually erase emails from time to time, the BlackBerry memory will fill up.
