It is not uncommon for PS3 hard drives to malfunction. Because integral software related to the PS3's operating system is stored on the hard drive, the PS3 will not turn on if the hard drive is damaged. If you've taken the hard drive out, re-insert the drive fully and correctly as instructed by the PS3's documentation.
OverheatingOverheating is most commonly encountered on older PS3 models. Due to hardware design in older models, using the PS3 for a long period of time could result in overheating which will cause the PS3 to shut off automatically. After cooling off, the PS3 will turn on again and work normally until the process repeats itself. Sony will repair your PS3 if it is overheating and still within warranty.
VentilationThe PS3 relies on internal fans and open vents for cooling. Use a toothpick or can of compressed air to clean the vents on the front and back of the PS3. If the PS3 is in an area that attracts a lot of dust, do this regularly to keep the vents unclogged.
PreventionIn addition to frequently cleaning the vents, place the PS3 away from carpet or other areas that attract dust, ideally in a cool area that receives a constant airflow. Limiting PS3 playtime to an hour or two at a time will also prevent overheating. Although hardware malfunctions are usually out of your control, try not to turn the PS3 off during firmware and software updates.
